Sedona Facts
Sedona is one of Arizona’s premier tourism, recreation, resort, arts and cultural, and retirement centers. At an altitude of 4,500′, Sedona escapes the desert heat of Southern Arizona and the mountain snows to the north with either just a short drive away. Sedona’s location at the mouth of renown Oak Creek Canyon and at the center of the state’s legendary Red Rock Country affords breath-taking panoramas, four delightfully mild seasons, plenty of sunshine and clean, fresh air. Highway 89A through Oak Creek Canyon was Arizona’s first designated Scenic Highway and was named by Rand-McNally as one of the most beautiful drives in America. The area is the second most visited site in the state after the Grand Canyon.
Established in 1902 but not incorporated until 1988, the community was named after Sedona Schnebly, an early settler. Sedona spreads across the boundaries of two north central Arizona counties, Coconino and Yavapai, and is completely surrounded by the Coconino National Forest. Incorporated Sedona and the unincorporated areas in Oak Creek Canyon, the Village of Oak Creek, Red Rock Loop Road and the canyons to the west are collectively known as the Greater Sedona Area™. The area’s housing is predominately single family residences with some condominium developments and there is a preponderance of small owner-operated businesses serving the community.
Tourism, in concert with the retirement and the arts and culture communities, forms Sedona’s economic base with the Forest Service estimating that four million people visit the area annually. Sedona has something for everyone - world class resorts and small family-run motels, quaint to elegant bed and breakfasts, fine restaurants, outstanding shops and diverse art galleries. The beauty of the area and the climate make sightseeing and hiking popular, golf and tennis are almost year-round activities. Visitors can take a jeep ride into the backcountry or view red rock monoliths from horseback or hot air balloons. Red Rock Country has been the setting of many motion pictures and continues to be a favorite location for all forms of filming - motion, video & still.
Sedona is a hub for visitors to Northern Arizona. After enjoying all that Sedona has to offer, including Red Rock and Slide Rock State Parks, many visitor sites such as the Grand Canyon, Jerome, Meteor Crater, Sunset Crater, Indian ruins and Native American Reservations are easy day trips.

Verde Canyon Railroad Tours
“There is something special for every season on the train, from wildflowers, to Eagles, to fabulous unspoiled scenery. After 5 trips I still look forward to riding the train again.”
Come and see The Wildflowers In Bloom!
Clarkdale, AZ - Whenever one steps aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad for a ride through one of Arizona’s most scenic inner canyons, it is a trip back in time, and during the Spring, the canyon is even more enticing. The blooming flowers and cactus are spectacular in the Verde Canyon.
Surprises never cease as the train creeps carefully over a towering trestle, threading its way through a 680 foot man-made tunnel and around curve after curve to Perkinsville in a two hour journey before its trip home. Animals and waterfowl are visible year round, including Mule and Whitetail Deer, Antelope, Javelina, Red-tail Hawks, Treat Blue Heron and Belted Kingfishers. Observant passengers may even glimpse a Mountain Lion or Brown Bear along the way.
The railroad, originally built in 1911, was purchased by David L. Durbano, in 1988. It was used solely as a freight line to carry coal and cement between the towns of Drake and Clarkdale. “The addition of the passenger excursions in 1990, however, has been a phenomenal success,” explained Ron Lindsay, superintendent of operations. “During its maiden year, over 40,000 passengers explored the rugged Southwest canyonlands aboard our refurbished Metro North coaches and open-air viewing cars. Today, over 65,000 people per year enjoy the same unspoiled and protected wilderness area, many during March, April and May. Demand, from individuals and groups, encouraged us to add Mondays and two trains on Saturdays to our Spring schedule,” added Lindsay.
The train does not run every day of the year. The train departs Clarkdale generally at 1pm but the schedule varies each month. Please call us for the train schedule when booking a train package. The train depot has a full-service cafe and gift shop; food and beverages are also available on the train in coach or first class cars. All cars are climate-controlled and access open-air viewing cars to really experience the diverse natural beauty of the canyon. Advanced reservations for the Verde Canyon Railroad’s Fall Color Tours can be made by calling the Southwest Inn at Sedona (800-483-7422), located just 25 minutes from the train. (see package rates below)
The Verde Canyon Railroad takes passengers on a 40-mile round-trip through a cottonwood forest around the base of a desert mesa beside the winding Verde River, a truly remarkable autumn landscape.
The Verde Canyon Railroad …. “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”
Packages at the Southwest Inn at Sedona include 2 nights lodging, a deluxe continental breakfast for 2 each day, and two coach train tickets. Senior citizens (65 and older) are entitled to a train discount. First Class train tickets are available at an additional charge - call for more information.

Testimonials
Dear folks,
Mrs. MacNab and I were thoroughly delighted with our stay with you as part of our 50th anniversary trip. The chilled bottle of sparkling cider in the warm, cozy and clean room and your ever-present smiles made us feel welcome. We enjoyed the convenience of the location among the many facets of Sedona, including the airport, where this retired pilot relived his early days in a WACO biplane, for most of one afternoon, seeing the red rocks from the air. We hope to see you again.

Dear folks,
Now that we are safely back in England I thought that I would drop you a line to say how much we enjoyed our stay at the Southwest Inn. We stayed with you on 9/10/11 June, we have both said that it was by far the best hotel that we stayed in, and by far the most comfortable beds of any that we used! (and that includes the big hotels in Las Vegas)
I feel that I must give a special mention for Jamie the concierge, she is an asset to your hotel and deserves a pat on the back for her services, (just make sure that she is not eating or doing the crossword when you do it !) only joking.
Once again, thank you, you helped make our honeymoon trip very memorable and we will most certainly recommend you to any friends that are visiting Sedona.

Dear Joel,
Thank you for an enjoyable stay at the Southwest Inn at Sedona. I stayed at the hotel from June 15-20. I loved the decor of the room and the hospitality and friendliness of the staff. I was traveling alone and everyone was so helpful.
It was my first time in Sedona and just a wonderful experience. I hope to make a return visit and would definitely stay with you again.
Sincerely, Judy Lehto

Mr. Gilgoff,
My wife and I stayed at the Southwest Inn last October. It was wonderful. I commend you and your team for an outstanding Inn. Special thanks to Bob and the desk staff. The breakfast was also outstanding. I have been fortunate to stay at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo as well as the Grove Park Inn in Asheviille, NC. Both of these places are renouned for their service, and rightly so. But these large resorts were not better than the the Southwest Inn. It is difficult to seperate my appreciation for the Inn from my incredible experience at seeing Sedona for the first time, but I still believe there is something special at your Inn. It shows in the details: the room decor, the fruit salad, most of all in the attitudes of the people. This quality is one that must be cultivated from the top and I commend you.
My thanks to you and your Staff. That trip was our 18th anniversary for my wife and I. It could not have been more special. Thank you. I eagerly await my next stay.
Best Regards
Jeff Page

I just wanted to thank you for a great couple of nights. The Inn was great, with the small touches to all the help we received. The desk was real helpful with the jeep tours. I also appreciated the help in calling the restaurant for my sweater. She went out of her way to call for us while we were out seeing the beautiful country there. My wife really love the touch with all your signature on the card and the whirlpool tub.
Thanks again, looking forward to coming back and staying there. We are trying to talk my wifes parents into a trip there next year, they have never seen the area but always wanted to.
Thanks Teddy and Kim Martin

To the staff at Southwest Inn,
We very much enjoyed our recent stay with you. We were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and you made it very special for us. We were even greeted with our names on a welcome board in your lobby! What a great surprise! But then when we got to our room, there was yet another treat; a bottle of chilled sparkling cider and a card signed by your entire staff. What a great way to treat your customers! Everyone of the staff we met, was great and so helpful. The reservations for dinner and the recommendations for the restuarants were superb!
Thanks again for the “royal” treatment. Hope to visit with you again on our next trip to the beautiful Sedona area!
Sincerely, Wayne & Nancy

Hello Folks…. As a transplanted Canadian, now living in Tennessee, who had no idea where to stay in Sedona for our February trip in ‘99, I chose your inn because of the appearance of your internet site.
Scary thing to do, but when we drove into your parking lot, the atmosphere almost took our breath away. What could have been a ruined four days, began, continued, and ended with such peace, cleanliness, professionalism and respect for the attitude of your people.
Your inn is nothing less than “wonderful”. We will be back to Sedona, and we will be staying at the Southwest Inn.
Thank you, Bill & Barb

Thank you for making our stay at the Southwest Inn at Sedona such an enjoyable one. (We were in room 111.)
As we mentioned, we frequently visit good friends who have a cabin in Oak Creek, so we don’t often have much of a chance to stay in Sedona. But the next time we do, we’d like it to be at your place! And we will definitely recommend it to our friends.
Overall impression of the hotel: 10 (loved the southwest decor/architecture, especially the fireplace)
Front Desk Staff: 10 (including extra cups, ice, bottle opener!!)
Cleanliness of Rooms: 10
Sincerely,
Cal & Roberta Crane

We just wanted to say once again what a wonderful experience we had in Sedona, largely due to the staff and facilities at the Southwest Inn. Joyce and Jamie greeted us with a smile and that smile never waned the whole time we were there!!! Bob set us up with some tours that were really fun, Jamie followed up with restaurant and other recommendations that set us on the right track. We are now considering a part time residence there and have Jamie to thank for the real estate info. We’ll be back!!!

Just returning to our everyday life and had to take the time to let you know what a marvelous time we had in Sedona. Your Southwest Inn is wonderful; Jamie is an amazing asset to your property. All our tour arrangements were handled by her prior to our arrival. Every restaurant she recommended was superb. Also, kudos to Bob. He was the concierge on duty the day of our arrival and made sure we had the right wine glasses for the wine my husband purchased while I was unpacking. Great Ventures was an excellent tour company (recommended by you) - we went on their Grand Canyon trip as well as the Colorado River float trip. I’m sure Jamie will remember the story of our hot air balloon trip for quite some time. You can be sure that if our travels bring us back to Sedona, the Southwest Inn will be the only place for us.
Thanks again for a wonderful vacation.

It is my pleasure to tell you that my group had a great time at your Inn and were treated unbelievable well from Joyce and Jamie, they are your true assets, they really enjoy their jobs and went out of their way to make sure we had a good time in Sedona. They will not be forgotten. Your Inn is quite nice, I liked the hot tub and the breakfast. I did tease Jamie about her wedding reception, I gave her a list of food items, even though she has no plans to get married. You might ask her about that!! We arrived back in S.C. tonight. To answer your questions, the internet is the answer for you, that is how we found you and you may consider using us as a reference for those folks thinking about staying at your Inn. We will put together come positive comments at your request if you like that idea.
Thanks again — RR

Dear Joel,
I’m a travel agent and was in Sedona for a quick overnight. I found your facility totally by accident. I stopped in looking for a recommended, inexpensive place. Your fabulous staff offered us the AAA $ as an incentive and showed me the room and facilities. It was so clean and well thought out, beautiful and inviting that we stayed. I WAS looking for a lower priced facility for my mom and I to use for an overnight stop to show her the lights, somewhere between Dec. 30 - Jan. 5, as a during the week run, when she came in from Connecticut. I don’t know if we will have a chance to get up to Sedona, now that she’s here I’m busier than a one armed paper hanger with hives. Ain’t that always the way….But I must tell you, you have the most personable and pleasant people in the world working for you. They are in keeping with your search for quality in your facility. As to what I’d like to see in the future….your updates on Sedona’s going’s on is a great idea. It keeps you and the town in my “reminder box.” I understand you also have a facility here in Phoenix. I may stick my nose in one day to see what that looks like too. Have terrific holidays and I’ll definitely keep you in mind as a stop for myself on my rare trips up there and of course as a STRONG recommendation for anyone I know who’s going up there. Smiles to you and everyone on your staff,
Dotty

Joel,
My wife, Caitlin, and I stayed at your Southwest Inn at Sedona as the first stop on our honeymoon. We chose you because we found you on the internet, found your site very helpful (you had the amenities we were looking for, like whirlpools and fireplaces) and your prices reasonable. When we checked in, we were amazed — the warm welcome and fantastic staff made us feel very special. I appreciate the emails you send from time to time because they remind us of the best vacation we ever had and they get us thinking about going back to Arizona some day. Keep them coming. You do a marvelous job!
Thanks,
Chris and Caitlin Hurtgen

Your Inn was recommended by a friend and after our first stay, we loved it!! We will be returning to the Inn Jan. 14, 2000 and I can hardly wait! The Inn was CLEAN and that’s a big plus!! Everyone was very accommodating to our needs, the room was beautiful and let me say it again - CLEAN!! The breakfast was great and the room bright and cheery - overall it was a wonderful stay!
I would appreciate information sent about all your specials, area attractions anything about Sedona and the Southwest Inn that might entice us to come visit more often! Looking forward to our January trip, we’ll see you then.

I choose your Inn from the information on your Internet site as referenced by searching for Sedona on Yahoo. Your website described the rooms and perks in detail, and I thought it would be a nice place for our 2nd honeymoon. Our stay confirmed this impression. We had a great time in Sedona and especially enjoyed the hospitality from your staff. In fact, we were impressed even before we arrived as circumstances forced us to change travel plans from April to November, and your staff handled this reservation change professionally and promptly.
My wife would like to know the name of the sparkling cider your staff provided in our rooms when we arrived, she forgot to write it down.
Thanks,
Frank

Greetings:
Karen and I just wanted to say happy holidays and thank you for remembering us. We loved our week’s vacation in Sedona and the wonderful way you pampered us and saw to our every request. Karen was thrilled with Sedona and I’m sure I won’t have any problem talking her into returning in the near future, although in 2000 we plan on taking a trip to Ireland for two weeks, so you probably won’t be seeing us until the year after.
Two weeks after staying with you, we attended a Body and Soul Conference in Boston and stayed at the Park Plaza. Let me tell you, we would take the Southwest Inn anytime. Two tiny little bathrooms, no fireplace, no jacuzzi. And so much more expensive than your wonderful inn. And the view–well, I’m sure I don’t have to explain to you the difference in the view. Happy New Year to all of you. We’ll be thinking of you every time it snows here in Massachusetts. A particular big HELLO to Anne on the desk and the fabulous Bob, world’s finest concierge.
Blessings,
Barry and Karen

My wife and I stayed at your beautiful Inn and We were especially impressed by the cleanliness of your grounds and property. As we pulled into the parking lot we observed three of your employees “sweeping” the parking lot–that was a good sign….and it got better.
The room (#222) was well maintained. The extra touches (VCR, nitelight, toilet bowl scrubber wrapped in plastic, ceiling fan, refrigerator, coffee pot, fireplace, porch furniture) were noted and are a sign of a class operation and an A-1 and hard working staff.
From your property we went to Laughlin, Nevada and stayed at a Hilton property. None of the above “extra touches” were included in their package deal. Your continental breakfast is wonderful and could only be improved by adding a “hot selection”, that is eggs, bacon etc. (We realize this “hot meal” could create more problems for you and your “Continental Breakfast” atmosphere).
We will not hesitate to recommend your facility to our friends and traveling companions. Keep up the good work. Please, at your staff meetings, pat your entire staff, from the front desk personnel, concierge and the cleaning and maintenance staff, on the back and tell them that their hard work does not go unnoticed…and that they make your facility a “class operation”.
Also know that we selected your property for our stay from information that we obtained on the internet.
Thanks again…..and Happy Holidays….

Mission King
Same floor plan as King View (also on our second floor) with the addition of a small counter/cupboard area where the refrigerator and coffee maker are located, and private entrance accessed by stairs. This is a “theme room”. The room decor is in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright, with dark oak furniture (in the “arts & crafts” period), lamps, wall graphics, drapes and bedspreads all reminiscent of this period of the 20’s and 30’s. This room is an excellent choice for that romantic getaway.
